Palo Duro Canyon does not get the attention that it deserves. As the second largest canyon in the country, measured by length and depth, it boasts a rugged beauty and a deep history that is rarely experienced elsewhere. Palo Duro Canyon was once home to Native Americans and later hosted large numbers of pioneers as they traveled across the country.
Located in the Texas Panhandle, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is centered around this natural phenomenon. There are many on-site activities for families and and solo adventurers alike. Hiking, biking, and equestrian trails as well as camp sites, restaurants, a visitor’s center, and an amphitheater are prominent features of this natural wonder. One of the major draws to Palo Duro State Park is the TEXAS outdoor musical drama. This family-friendly theater production runs at the park’s Pioneer Amphitheater and features music, humor, and fireworks. Early arrivals to the show can even enjoy a classic Texas-style barbecue dinner before the show! During the summer, many weekends are occupied by Native American exhibitions, fireworks shows, and group hiking or yoga trips. The Canyon can be very busy, so solitude is not always easy to find.
For the adventurers, Palo Duro Canyon features miles of trails for hiking, biking, or horseback explorers. Special equestrian campsites are available for those who would like to bring a horse of their own and an on-site stable offers horses for guided rides through the canyon grounds.
Further exploring options, hikers and bikers may enjoy any of five major trails that traverse the state park’s grounds. By far the most famous popular path is Lighthouse Trail, is a relatively easy six mile trek past several of the park’s most famous formations, including Capitol Peak and Sunday Canyon as well as the Tecovas Formation. The trail culminates with a path to the foot of the 300 foot tall Lighthouse Formation, the most famous geological formation in the park. From that point, a narrow, steep path will allow willing adventurers to reach the base of the pinnacle, or even venture a bit further. This formation is recognized as a national natural landmark and is featured in magazines and on memorabilia all over the park. Although the formation itself is impressive, many travelers are more impressed by the views of the canyon itself.
Another popular hike is the Triassic Trail, which begins at the rim near the visitor center and slowly descends before ending at Table Rock, a beautiful summit along the edge of the canyon. Along the trail, hikers will cross stone bridges over creek beds and may experience many wildlife encounters. At the end, the trail offers beautiful southward views over the canyon. There are many nights in the warmer months where park rangers lead sunset hikes along this trail so that less experienced hikers can enjoy the vistas without worrying about the logistics. The eleven mile long Givens, Spicer & Lowry Running Trail is the longest trail in the park and offers a path across the badlands, around the canyons, and near some of the park’s wonderful geological formations.
